An ancient Japanese art dated as early as the Jomon period more than 9000 years ago. Urushi is the Japanese word for lacquer. The varnish used is made from the sap of the Urushi Tree, also known as the Japanese Varnish Tree. Harvesting the greyish-white juice is no easy feat as it is poisonous in its raw form. Urushi’s strong anti-microbial properties reduce scalp irritation from microbes present in scissors, and its rust and water resistance adds durability to the already reliable craftmanship of Joewell.
